Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level courses taken at the high school level. They offer a more demanding course load than the traditional high school course. However, the student can receive college credit. (For example, receiving a 3 out of 5 on the AP US History Exam may count for 6 history credits in college.)
In May, the AP Exams are administered. All students who take AP courses are not required to take the AP Exam for that course. Students must register prior to the exam date. Information will be sent home to each parent. Each exam is graded on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high). Each college has different standards for how the test grade is interpreted; these standards may vary based on the subject matter.

In early May of the junior year, a meeting will be held with students and parents to discuss their AP options for the senior year. Department chairs will be present to explain the courses available in their particular disciplines. Students should be careful in choosing too many AP classes as the amount of work can be overwhelming.
