for further information.
Latin School administers the
Scholastic Testing Services (STS) achievement test. It measures student progress
in two foundation areas -- verbal and math. Scores are compiled in national
percentiles; in effect, your child’s achievement will be reported in
comparison to all other fifth, sixth and seventh graders who take the test
nationally.
Our entrance exam covers math and language arts skills in six different areas:
Math Computations measures a student's knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The student must compute problems of varying degrees of difficulty. No calculators are to be used.
Math Reasoning measures the student's ability to solve math concepts and problems.
Reading Vocabulary measures vocabulary.
Reading Comprehension measures a student's understanding of short passages.
Writing List measures the mechanics of grammar.
Language Arts -- Composition -- measures a student's understanding of sentence construction, phrases and clauses and language expression.
The Battery Average is the composite of all six sub-tests. This score is the best single indicator of a student's overall achievement level compared to other students in the test group. Because of its vital importance, the reading score is weighed more heavily than other areas in the computing the composite.
There is no realistic way to study for the exam. This exam is based on what is already known. The best preparation is to relax and get plenty of sleep the night before the exam.
On the day of the entrance exam, bring your $50 check made payable to Covington Latin School and arrive by 8:45 am on all Saturday exam dates. Friday's entrance exam begins at 8:10 am. Students will be given two breaks during the exam. The exam usually takes 3 1/2 hours to administer.
After we have received and analyzed the entrance exam results, you will be notified of our recommendations for acceptance. Explanation of the entrance exam results, registration and financial assistance information will be made available on designated parent meeting nights. For the April and May entrance exam results, a letter of explanation will be mailed to you. Contact the school with any questions regarding the entrance exam results at (859)291-7044 or carl.goodmonson@covingtonlatin.org.
