The second part of the summer reading involves reading Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay Self Reliance. While reading the novel and the essay, maintain a notebook, wherein you will record impressions, thoughts, possible themes, symbols, imagery, stylistic patterns, insights and ideas inspired by the literature. Be sure to include passages that you feel include the essence of the literary works. You will bring this notebook to class on the first day of school.
