Starting a new school as an 11 year old freshman can be daunting but there I was in 1977. My initial reaction was one of fear and apprehension, but I soon realized that there were many others in my class who had a similar story: growing restless in grade school, not being challenged, not working terribly hard to maintain good grades.
This realization quickly helped me to become more comfortable with my new surroundings and I began making friends quickly. The curriculum was rigorous, but I expected that; my father, Thomas, graduated from CLS in 1956. The transition was a challenge but the faculty took into consideration our need for a little extra time to “get our acts together”. Each year brought new challenges and more independence.
Once I reached the coveted status of CLS Senior, I had been given all the necessary tools to be a solid performer at the college level: excellent verbal and written communication skills, tremendous study skills and the discipline to remain focused on and committed to my education. My CLS experience proved invaluable as it instilled the willingness to achieve and succeed as an undergraduate and graduate student in business. My wife Susan and I are now the proud parents of two successful CLS students-both of whom are having extraordinary experiences. We know there are many alternatives to Covington Latin School. But there are simply no substitutes.
