Phillip Dressman '12 has been selected to represent Covington Latin School in the University of Kentucky's 2010 Class of Kentucky. One rising junior from each high school in the Commonwealth is selected to form this prestigious group. The program convenes on July 16 at U.K. and offers the opportunity to meet top administrators and academic advisers and attend sporting events and classes.
Incoming student Kendall Pennington '14, a 7th Grader at Summit View Middle School in Independence, KY was recently honored for an exceptional score on the ACT by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP®) at the Grand Recognition Ceremony on May 24, 2010 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on the Duke University Campus in Durham, NC. Anna Matchinga '13 and the Shining Star Girls 13U Basketball team became the 2010 AAU 13U Division II Kentucky Champions at the AAU Kentucky State Championship tournament held May 7-9, 2010, in Lexington. With this accomplishment, this team becomes the first Shining Star Girls Basketball team to win a Kentucky State AAU Basketball Championship. The team will compete at the Division II AAU Nationals July 9-14, 2010 in Mason, OH.
Rising Seniors Michael Stephens, Jeremiah Hsieh, Steven McMurtry and John Deis have been selected as National Merit Quarter Finalists.
Rising Seniors John Deis, Alison Wintring, Andrew Field and Michael Stephens have been selected as Governor's Scholars (GSP). Margo Morton, Hannah Griese and Madhulika Mamadi have been selected for Governor's School of the Arts (GSA).
Michael Wilmhoff '14 was awarded the "Help Can't Wait Award" for quick actions on saving the life of another using American Red Cross Life Saving Skills by the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. He participated in filming a promotional video for the American Red Cross in March.

Nikki Schuler '14 participated in 4 different classes in the Cross-Rails Division of the April 17 Winton Woods Riding Center's horse show. Of 15 entries in each class, Nikki placed: 4th in Hunt Seat Equitation (Walk/Trot/Cantor), 5th in Hunter Pleasure (Walk, Trot, Cantor), 2nd in Hunter Hack ( Walk, Trot, Cantor and jumping over two X-rails).
Nikki placed 2nd overall in the 4 combined classes, earning the "Reserve Champion" Ribbon!
CLS student and cellist, Jacob Donnermeyer '11, and the NKU Youth Orchestra recently traveled to New York City for the Heritage Music Festival where they were awarded First Place in the orchestra competition. They competed against eight other orchestras from the U.S. and Canada
Elizabeth Ernst '10 has been selected as WCPO's Student of the Week. Please click here to view the clip. Criteria for nomination include: persistence in giving personal best, an inspiring example to others, peer leadership, strong contribution to school and/or community (through volunteerism, school clubs, extra-curricular activities, projects, etc.), high academic achievement, positive attitude, perseverance (i.e. overcoming a handicap, behavioral problem, or other personal difficulty), love of learning and desire, determination, and diligence to improve.
Kentucky Monthly Magazine annually profiles a select group of high school seniors deemed "Most Likely To Succeed". Of the 11 students named statewide, two were our very own: Spencer Fogelman and Lily Rodgers. Click on their names to read their profiles.
Latin School was also praised by the publication: There is no agreed-upon method for judging private schools [in contrast to rankings of public schools]. Kentucky has some outstanding privates, including St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Covington Latin School and Lexington's Sayre School.
Duke TIP® (Talent Identification Program) 2010 Talent Search results have been released. The results are extraordinary: Duke TIP offered State Recognition to 20 out of 23 participating Latin School students. Three of these students received Grand Recognition on a national level: Daniel James '13, Matthew Le '14 and John Schlaak '14.

Phelan Spence '11, competed in the Junior Olympic fencing competition recently held in Memphis, TN. Spence, shown here getting a ‘touch’ against an opponent in the Junior (U 20) Foil competition, was ranked 42nd out of 205 fencers. In March, Spence will compete in the Arnold Tournament Cadet competition in Columbus, Ohio, where he won the Gold Medal last year in the Youth – 14 category.
The following Covington Latin students were honored to receive the Serra Club Servers Award at a Solemn Vespers Ceremony on February 28 at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption. This award is given in recognition of the faithful service these young adults have provided as altar servers at their Northern Kentucky parishes:

The 2010 Open House took place on February 14, 2010. Latin School is grateful to all participanting members of the CLS community, who ensured the event's excellence and to the 143 attending families, who made it the largest in recorded School history.
Prep Vance Perlmutter took third place in the 2010 Annual Cincinnati Fencing Club Tournament. Vance has been fencing a little over one year, taking lessons from for Olympian fencer, Master Ed Wright.

Freshman Anna Matchinga was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Basketball Tournament in Louisville the weekend of December 11, 2009. In the two games played, Anna had a total of 25 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks and 2 steals. The girls' team was 1-1 for the tournament.
Freshman Andrea Halenkamp has won 2nd place overall for Robot Design and Programming, in a robotics competition offered through the First Lego League on December 5th. Andrea's team placed 5th in the NKY region out of 26 teams and has been invited to compete at the state level--a competition offering engineering scholarships to Western Kentucky University on January 9th in Bowling Green, KY.
Senior Kevin Clancy was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Basketball Tournament in Louisville the weekend of December 11, 2009.
Dan Hopkins was named to the JV Regional Boys Soccer All-Tournament Team.
On October 23 and 24th, Senior Elizabeth Ernst performed with the Cincinnati Ballet's production of Swan Lake. Though an impressive achievement unto itself, this is a particularly noteworthy accomplishment because less than a year ago, Liz underwent a comprehensive and highly invasive procedure to correct a worsening sciolsis condition. Though successful, surgery left Liz with severely limited physical capabilities, requiring extensive recovery with a back brace for three months and ambitious physical therapy extending well beyond that. Her journey has been a remarkable one, culminating in her fall performance with the Ballet.
Senior Beth Whitacre reached three milestones in the same soccer game on October 7. She scored her 100th career goal in a 10-0 victory at Newport, then scored goals 101 and 102 tying her with a Boone County grad as the top-scoring Northern Kentucky female soccer player in KHSAA history-and in a 9-0 victory over Ludlow on October 13, Beth scored three additional goals, pushing her total to 105 and securing the top-scorer award in Northern Kentucky!

Seven members of the Class of 2009 were named KY Green Scholars by earning a 4.0 GPA each of her or his four years at Latin School and a 28 ACT composite or better: Brian Becker, Rachel Bier, Jesse Coe, Kelly King, Sierra O'Bryan, Andrea Patton and Brynn Stylinski.
Seniors Michelle Schulte and LeAnne Siemer have been named National Merit Semifinalists and to Senior Mak Kroger has been named as a National Merit Commended Student.
Freshman Alex Trunnell has won the Honor Camper Award from Camp Ernst; one of a select few of over 3,000 campers. The award is offered to campers who display the YMCA core character values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility. "Alex is a very influential young person who has impacted her peers through integrity and compassion in real, everyday terms", said Camp Director Jon Perry in a press release statement.

Junior Phelan Spence, took home first place honors in the Cincinnati Fencing Club sponsored Botterell Open Fencing Tournament held on Saturday, June13. In July, Spence will travel to Dallas, Texas, to fence in the USFA Summer Nationals. Click here for details.

Sophomore Mallory Thelen received second place in the national Philosophy Slam competition, for her response to the question: “Which is more powerful, greed or giving?” Click here to read her submission.

Senior Lily Rodgers took first place in Class A State for the 3,200 meter and second for the 1,600 meter. This makes her a two-time State Champion, because she also won first place honors in the 3,200 meter in 2007.
