  • Core Curriculum

At the heart of the Covington Latin experience is a rigorous, accelerated classical curriculum designed specifically for academically gifted students. Across four traditional academic days each week, students engage deeply with the foundational disciplines of a liberal arts education while developing the habits of mind that prepare them for success in college and beyond.

Our Core Curriculum is built around six essential areas of study:

  • Theology — Students explore the Catholic faith and develop an understanding of their relationship with God, one another, and the world around them.
  • English & Speech — Through literature, composition, rhetoric, and public speaking, students develop the ability to read critically, write effectively, communicate clearly, and articulate ideas with confidence.
  • Social Studies— Students study the development of civilizations and the people, ideas, institutions, and events that have shaped the world.
  • Latin — The study of Latin introduces students to language, culture, history, literature, and the foundations of Western civilization. Studying this classical language impresses upon students the importance of understanding linguistics and encourages them to engage with all other romantic languages critically.
  • Mathematics — Students develop computational fluency, logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and an understanding of the structures underlying mathematics.
  • Science — Students investigate the physical and natural world through rigorous scientific study, developing both scientific knowledge and the ability to think critically.

A Classical Foundation for Modern Learning

The CLS curriculum is intentionally rooted in the classical liberal arts tradition while preparing students for the demands of a modern world. Students are challenged to read critically, write critically, speak critically, and think critically across disciplines.

Because our students are academically gifted, the curriculum is accelerated and appropriately challenging. Students progress through a carefully sequenced program that builds knowledge and skills from year to year while allowing opportunities for honors, Advanced Placement, dual-credit, and elective coursework. As all of our classes begin at an honors level, students are challenged in each and every domain they encounter.

The four Core Curriculum Days provide the foundation. Causa Essendi provides the opportunity to extend, apply, and explore that foundation in new ways. Whether students decide to explore pathways to their future career or engage with dual-credits, students will extend their learning and enrich their lives.

Together, these experiences form a distinctive CLS education: rigorous in academics, grounded in the liberal arts, and designed to cultivate students who are intellectually curious, articulate, disciplined, and prepared to use their talents in service to others.
